FUN FACT FRIDAY

The FRESH Air Fair is tomorrow, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., at Talawanda High School. Officers will be running a bicycle safety course for the kiddos, will have a table supplying child DNA kits, and will have a prescription medication drop box station, so stop out and see them!

The word FRESH comes from the full name FAMILY RESOURCES and EDUCATION for SAFETY and HEALTH and is a partnership between McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, the Coalition for a Healthy Community, the City of Oxford and Miami University Police Departments, and the Talawanda School District. This event is held in conjunction with the annual Kiwanis Pancake Day. (yum!)

Have a FUN, safe weekend, everyone!

FYI. The Franklin High School is conducting a Mock-auto crash to the rear of the high school. Frankin Police, Fire, and EMS, along with Careflight and Anderson Funeral Home, are demonstrating their expertise.

This is a drill and no actual emergency exists!

The Free Fishing Days weekend coming up on May 5 and 6 offers Ohioans of all ages the chance to experience the fun of catching a fish. Here are some helpful tips for taking a youngster out fishing:

• Keep the trip simple by considering a child’s age and skill level.

• Choose a pond, lake or stream where children will be able to easily catch a few fish.

• A spin-cast reel is usually the easiest for kids to use.

• Bring a camera and snacks.

• Be patient – plan on spending time untangling lines, baiting hooks, landing fish, and taking pictures.

• Most of all, have fun!

Ohio’s Free Fishing Days are open to all Ohio residents and extend to all of Ohio’s public waters, including Lake Erie and the Ohio River. This is the only weekend all year that does not require anyone 16 or older to obtain a fishing license. Don't forget! Ohio State Parks is also offering a camping discount during Ohio’s Free Fishing Days. Campers can receive a 20 percent off discount May 4-6 by using the promotion code 18ANGLER. ow.ly/U9ja30jzuiw

Prescribed burns (or controlled burns or fires) take place across the Buckeye State annually. Such initiatives help restore important habitat, creating healthier ecosystems and preventing the spread of larger forest fires by reducing “fuel,” or dense, dry, and overgrown areas of land that are fire-susceptible. Prescribed burns also create “fire breaks,” or clear, open areas of land, which help responders contain and control fires in the event of wildfire sparked by a lightning strike or some other cause. As a tool for wildlife managers, wildfires are vital for many plants species to thrive. By conducting carefully controlled burns, wildlife species that rely on these fire-dependent tree and shrub species will greatly benefit. Learn more at youngforest.org/controlled-burning

Pictured: a recent controlled burn at Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area on the Holmes/Wayne county border. Species benefiting from this program at Killbuck Marsh include sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, American woodcock, grasshopper sparrows, Eastern meadowlarks, and cottontail rabbits.

Trumbull County Wildlife Officer Martin Cisine recently responded to a call about a common loon that had ended up in thick vegetation in the backwaters of Mosquito Lake. Common Loons are large, diving waterbirds with legs situated further back on their bodies. These legs help loons plunge under water to catch fish, but they make taking off from land and small areas of water nearly impossible.

The disoriented bird was not injured, but was trapped in an area of water too small for it to gain speed and take flight. Fortunately, Officer Cisine was able to gently capture the frightened bird with a net and release it in a larger, open lake right across the road.

The job of a wildlife officer requires a variety of skills and knowledge. And with only one state wildlife officer assigned to each of Ohio’s 88 counties, they sure do an outstanding job at protecting our wildlife and citizens. Thank you, Officer Cisine!

Handsome dog, but you might want to discourage tail-chasing. It could become neurologically imprinted and become a serious habitual problem.

LOL. They never figure it out do they?

Surprised he didn’t alert to it and want you to arrest it lmao

I seen an interview last night where her Granddaughter was being interviewed about her. She could barely keep her composure. I felt bad for her because I loved my Grandma dearly. RIP, Mrs. Bush. You were dearly loved by your family.

What a wonderful example of a First Lady. Prayers and God bless the family.

I had always considered her one of my favorite FIrst Ladies. Thoughts and prayers to her family.
