Middletown Division of Police

From Chief Rodney Muterspaw:

Hello Middletown,

You probably have seen an increase in law enforcement in the Middletown gateway areas with MPD, Butler County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Patrol. We know social media has been blowing up about it and we are getting a lot of questions about it, so we wanted to address it for you, our community.

The City Manager and Public Safety Team (Fire and Police) have been working hard with our community to fight the nationwide heroin epidemic, which directly affects Middletown, among other cities. We are in the pipeline between two major cities so we have to try different tactics than most cities. We are a part of the Heroin Summit at the Atrium (now in stage 13), which focuses on treatment, post treatment, youth activities and other important functions to combat heroin from an educational standpoint. Research it. This Heroin Summit, is setting some standards throughout Ohio as an innovative community based problem solving team. It isn't just a bunch of people in suits sitting around talking, it is serious work in progress. See the heroin reduction chart below. We have seen a good decrease in this. It is a mixture of everything – stricter enforcement, federal drug indictments, the Heroin Summit advancement, community support and teamwork. Great results!

We hope this helps with your questions. We are not going to sit and allow drug dealers to drive through Middletown to sell their product. You will continue to see a large police presence in town for periods of time. We are adding two more K9’s this summer. Know that we are doing this to continue to take our city back. There are too many good things going on (new schools, new businesses, city events, east end development, concerts downtown, fireworks) to not do everything we can to continue improvement. I am sure some of you have complaints on dealers and feel frustrated. Understood! But get us what you can and we will do our best. I can't tell you how many cases we have solved based on an original complaint that came through on here. We took off record levels of fentanyl out of here in 2017 – more to come.

Another reason we have OSP and BCSO in the city so much is to help us with our truck problem. Overweight vehicles are killing us on non-truck routes. We hear your complaints and we really are trying to fix this. We have personally asked outside agencies to help us with this problem. Ohio is known for potholes. The additional weight of these vehicles help cause these massive potholes, which is frustrating for all of us. I have hit them in my own car also. Potholes occur when snow and ice melt as part of freeze-thaw cycles. The water then drains beneath the pavement through cracks caused by the wear and tear of traffic. As the temperatures freeze, the water becomes ice and expands below the pavement, forcing the pavement to rise. As the weight of traffic continues to pound on this raised section a hole starts to occur under the surface and the pavement cracks, forming a pothole. People that ignore the laws on vehicle weight are simply being selfish and it causes more damage to our city streets.

There is an online form to report a pothole through the city. The link is: www.cityofmiddletown.org/FormCenter/Public-Works-10/Pothole-Patrol-52

Albert Einstein once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. We have and are changing the way we fight these battles. Everyone is not going to be happy with these efforts and methods, some will get tickets and arrests, but bear with us as we focus on these operations. We are looking at every method possible to win this fight - some may not like it, but most will.

Have a great week!

Last evening we received a video of a potential threat at Middletown High School for today. Within an hour MCSD administration and staff were meeting here with detectives to review and identify.

By 10:30 p.m. those in the video were found by our officers and detained for investigation. The threat is over and more details will follow.

Thank you to Middletown City Schools for jumping on this immediately and working with us right away to get the problem solved. We take any threat against the schools seriously and will continue to monitor this situation with MCSD.

This is so sad. I certainly hope these 3 students are made to understand what they did won’t be tolerated & to under cover what made them do this. Some counseling needs to occur plus including family in this!

It's scary to know that my son knew these kids and I just met them myself they looked like good kids. This situation couldn't turned out into a much tragic one had sometime reported them and cops showed up not knowing those were bb guns 3 children could've lost their lives.

There should be present at the elementary school as well. When first grades child is be slammed by another student and all he gets is five minutes of his recess taken away. The principal is doing nothing. Next time the police will be called there.

I agree with sending more police officers rather than arming teachers. Two different roles and sets of responsibilities for keeping kids safe.

I hope these kids are punished accordingly because this has gotten way out of hand and it's not funny

We love when our friends from Columbus Crew SC stop by for a visit! These superhero costumes are pretty awesome! ...

No the bird is from the same habitat as the penguins in the wild

Do they seem to respond to people on the other side if the glass?

Love them, so precious. Eat up that herring little ones.

They say never do live tv with animals

The chinstraps are so tiny ... are they babies

What’s the temperature they can live in

So cute how they stand in line for their fish and then move over for the next guy...cute.🐧

Theyre standing in line for their fish 💜💜💜

There is an echo due to the room he is in

Do all the different species get along

No rivalry between the different groups?

Can they live in a house or backyard ?

Hope all goes well with breeding and growing l
