We have a secret admirer! Actually, this person appears to be a secret supporter of the OPD. While a group of officers were eating lunch at LaRosa's today, our supporter bought EACH of them a $25 gift card. How nice is that? Our officers were very touched by the gesture and wanted to thank them. It's not the monetary value that gives us the feels, it's the thought that truly counts. ...

WEEKEND UPDATE:
> A 25-year-old male was stopped because he had warrants through OPD. We found he had meth and needles on him. The county jail found some other substance hidden away in a very “awkward” spot. (hint: latex gloves were required.) That mystery substance is being sent to the lab for examination.

> Chivalry is dead. Or at least non-existent when one is drunk. Officers were sent uptown for a male and female who were both so drunk they were having trouble standing up, much less walking. Once the police approached them, the male let go of the female, to whom he was offering physical support, and ran away. Just to make sure you caught that..when the police came, he dropped her and ran away (self-centered much?) He was caught by OPD’s star runner, Officer Butler, who easily caught up with him. The female ended up at the hospital and the male was picked up…by his mother.

> Here are a couple stories to give you a different perspective on officer safety. Think about what YOU would think or do in these situations:

---- Officers were sent to a domestic call. Once there, and after the officer had the male drop his multiple pocket knives on the ground, the male suddenly bolted toward the back bedrooms in the apartment. Officer Reihs pursued him so he could not get his hands on other weapons, and the male was quickly subdued. Thankfully, in this case, Officer Reihs was keenly aware and responsive. We do not know why the guy decided to run or what he was planning on doing. Domestics can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous for police officers.

---- While on a traffic stop and seated in the front seat of his cruiser, an officer observed a male walking toward him. The man was walking with purpose, almost aggressively, while talking to himself. The officer, Officer Butler, got out of the driver’s seat and verbally tried to get the guy to back off. The guy aggressively continued his path until he reached the officer and got so close the officer pushed him away and made space between them. Officer Butler, although ready to protect himself, was successful in talking him down and calming the situation without any additional physical force. The male subject was taken to the psychiatric unit at a local hospital a short time later. Keep in mind, along with this unpredictable and volatile person, the officer also had to be aware of the whereabouts of the driver or passengers of the car he had stopped.

> An officer was flagged down by a female claiming her purse was stolen and the suspect ran off. Officers found him and observed him throw the purse over the fenced in dumpster area at a nearby convenience store. The male was arrested and it was determined that all of the contents of the purse were intact. The male, who she knew and had gotten into an argument with just prior, was arrested and charged.

> Party fouls: multiple mistakes were made by those who partied too hard or too foolishly. From something so simple as walking down the street drinking a beer (we are not New Orleans and have NEVER allowed this) to passing out in a stranger’s living room, to waking up not knowing how your face got beat up, people put themselves in some bad positions. As the weather gets warmer, we’re hoping for good judgment to prevail. Fingers crossed!

Monday is coming to a close. We think Mondays should be optional. May every day this week get better and better for you!

City of Oxford, Ohio - Division of Police

FUN FACT FRIDAY

In continuation of honoring the history of African Americans in law enforcement, today we honor one of our own.

Dwight “Bucky” Johnson was hired as a full-time police officer in 1975. Throughout his career with OPD, he worked as a patrol officer and a detective until his retirement in 1996.

During the 1997-98 school year, the Talawanda Board of Education and the City of Oxford joined together to support the establishment of a school resource officer program. While police officers had spent time at the high school and the middle school as part of the department's Community Oriented Policing Services (C.O.P.S.) initiative, this was the first school year that an officer was assigned specifically to this task. Bucky was rehired as a part-time police officer to become the first School Resource Officer (SRO) at the Talawanda Middle School (TMS). In addition to his SRO responsibilities at TMS, Bucky also spent time in the elementary schools working with staff and students, until he separated from OPD for the last time in 2012.

SRO Bucky Johnson had a positive impact on students, mentoring them and educating them on youth-related issues, all the while creating a safer environment for both students and staff, and it is for this reason we celebrate his achievements in policing as well as his contributions to our community.

I remember Bucky - always had time to talk with the kids and such a positive person. Thank you for all you did to make Oxford a better place.

Great guy!!

Students always felt they could go to him with their problems. A very special man.

Bucky was a wonderful Resource Officer while at TMS. He used respect, honesty, and humor, to help students through difficult times. A genuine smile, and a pat on a shoulder went a long way. I love seeing him around town.

Wonderful!

In the year of 1991 I wanted to play quarterback here

The awesome philanthropic group, Police Wives of Ohio, Inc., brought bags of brand new blankets to OPD for our officers to hand out to those in need. We thank them for their generosity and our officers will certainly put these blankets into the hands of those who need them.
Being Bengals football fans, we have a particular affection for this Bengals blanket, which is draped over Chief Jones. Being a Cleveland Browns fanatic, he was about breaking out in hives wearing it. He couldn't get it off fast enough! 🏈😆

Hives should go away by next season!!

Anyone who can hang in there with the Browns is obviously made of strong stuff. I live in Northeast Ohio and so I'm surrounded by Browns fans. I admire their tenacity.
